About

Dr. James Roehrig

Making the choice to start therapy can bring up a lot of thoughts and feelings. It's normal to feel uncertain whether a therapist will understand your needs and be able to help you change. Ultimately, therapy works best when you find a provider who you feel is a good fit. I offer new clients a free 20-minute video consultation so we can discuss what brings you to counseling and how I might be able to help. MY APPROACH TO THERAPY With over a decade of experience in the mental health field, I provide evidence-based therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and schema therapy to help clients develop the insights and tools they need to make positive changes. I pride myself on being able to shift my approach to find the one that works best for you. This can mean sharing readings and podcasts, conducting a values inventory, having an email check-in for a goal we’ve set to help with accountability, or writing custom coping statements that you can access when you need help outside of sessions. I want my clients to gain the confidence they need to deal with the ups and downs that life inevitably brings. My style in therapy is to be active, non-judgmental, transparent, and solution-oriented, which is a good fit for clients who are ready to commit to learning new skills and setting concrete goals for change. If you've struggled to connect with therapists who stay too silent, don't share feedback or coping skills, or don't hold you accountable - I may be a good fit to help you on your journey. MY PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE I've worked in a number of counseling and research settings and had the pleasure of working with many different client populations and issues. As a former staff psychologist at the on-site Facebook Wellness Center, and later at a therapy startup in San Francisco, I enjoyed working with tech sector employees. Whether it's addressing perfectionism, working on developing good work habits, or learning assertive communication, I understand the unique demands the tech industry can hold. Throughout my career, I've specialized in helping people recover from disordered eating and body image issues. My research experience at Wesleyan University, the University of Chicago, and Northeastern University, combined with clinical experience at Boston University and Kaiser Permanente helped me understand how these issues can affect clients and their families. I also truly enjoyed working with students at college counseling centers at the University of San Francisco and Emerson College. The diversity of the student populations and the training I received at these sites helped me appreciate the importance of exploring culture and the role of identity. Exploring my own cultural attitudes over the course of my career has been immensely important both professionally and personally.
